Mini Guide – Tegucigalpa
Location: Tegucigalpa is located in the southern part of Honduras,
in Francisco Morazán province. The elevation is around
3,000 feet. The population is around one million (May 2001),
according to the National Institute of Statistics.
Local History: Native Americans were already living in
the area of present-day Tegucigalpa, and calling it by that
name, when the first Europeans–Spanish miners–arrived in
the middle of the 1500s. (September 29, 1578 is the traditional
founding date of the city, but modern historians have determined
that this date is contrived.) The city was named capital
of Honduras in 1880.
Those Native Americans were mostly of the Lenca people;
unfortunately, their language is dead and not a lot is known
about their culture. More information on the Lenca can be
found in The Cost of Conquest by Linda Newson.
The early Spanish miners in Tegucigalpa found silver, mostly,
which supports the theory that the city’s name meant “silver
hill” in an indigenous language. Alas, those modern historians
have again spoiled a good story by punching holes in this
explanation; for one thing, the local Native Americans did
not mine silver and so it is unlikely they would have named
a hill for it. The meaning of the city’s name remains unknown;
possibilities include “place where men meet” and “colored
stones.”

Current Poll
Should "clothing optional" beaches be permitted
in Honduras?
- Absolutely, some tourists love to sunbathe au natural and the human
body is a work of art.
- Maybe, but only if certain issues such as beach location,
age limit and security are reviewed in detail.
- No way, it's not proper to be unclothed in public and
disrespectful of local moral and cultural standards.

Volunteer Positions
Bilingual School in Need of Help
We are looking for an English teacher to teach in our bilingual
elementary school in Ocotepeque, Honduras. We offer room
and board, and an opportunity to make money by teaching
ESL to adults. Spanish is helpful but not necessary. We
ask that you be able to commit until the end of the school
year in November. If you are interested, and have more questions
please contact us. If you are not able to help us in the
way of teaching, you can still help us by donating any money
or school supplies. We charge very little for tuition and
offer many scholarships to our students. This makes it very
hard for us to provide our students with the school supplies
that our needed to provide a successful bilingual education.
