Sol Air and projecthonduras.com to Promote Social Tourism to Honduras WASHINGTON, DC / July 7, 2003 / -- projecthonduras.com today announced a joint venture with Sol Air airlines designed to promote "social tourism" to Honduras. As part of the arrangement, Sol Air will offer deeply discounted fares to individuals attending the fourth annual Conference on Hnoduras in Copan Ruins, Honduras. The conference, scheduled for October 24-26, 2003, will bring together representatives of more than 60 organizations, companies, churches, and universities working on projects in the areas of education, healthcare and community building.
"This program is a milestone for both Honduras and the Conference on Honduras", said Marco Caceres, cofounder of projecthonduras.com. "It will fuel the growth of the conference by making it more affordable for conferees to travel to Honduras, and by doing so it will encourage more individuals and groups to get involved in a wide array of volunteer efforts to help the Honduran people."
Under the new program, the price of a roundtrip ticket to Honduras via Miami, Florida, will be reduced by 50%, to $200.00. The roundtrip fare from Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas, will also be cut by half, to $250.00 per person. These prices will take effect immediately and remain active through September 30, 2003. They will apply to registered conferees traveling during October 18-30, 2003.
The special fares will make it more attractive to fly to Honduras from the Miami and Dallas-Ft. Worth areas. They will also make it cost-effective for people flying from locations farther north such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC to switch to Sol Air for the second leg of their journey to Honduras.
"Honduras relies a great deal on humanitarian support provided by tens of thousands of private citizens participating in everything from medical brigades and housing construction teams to faith-based missions and student exchanges", said Caceres. "We want to work with government and industry to identify specific ways to expand this social tourism sector, and our partnership with Honduras' national airline is an excellent model."
The Conference on Honduras series is the third part of projecthonduras.com's three-step strategic plan to build an Internet- based model of development for Honduras. During the past five years, the volunteer group has created an online portal at http://www.projecthonduras.com which serves as a clearinghouse of information on Honduras and has established a growing international network of people communicating via listserv forums on ways to help the country.
The concept behind projecthonduras.com and the Conference on Honduras is based on the belief that developing countries like Honduras need to tap all of their "human capital" around the world in order to break their cycles of poverty and find ways to implement solutions to persistent problems. The Internet now provides the ability to quickly and cost-effectively organize masses of people and channel their experience, talents, and expertise into specific areas of need in a country.
