Good afternoon everybody...
We are now less than two weeks away from the start of the sixth annual Conference on Honduras in Copan Ruinas (http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference).
We have a total of 206 people confirmed to attend. To see the list, go to http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference/confirmed.htm
We have approximately 50 speakers over the course of four days.
We have a full-day workshop on sustainable programs and a full-day series of presentations and briefings by representatives of Honduras' tourism industry aimed at attracting more social tourists to the country.
We are still putting together the finishing touches on the event, arranging for seating, food services, simultaneous translation services/equipment, etc. But I feel very good about where we are at the moment.
After doing the Conference on Honduras for the past five years, I try not to sweat the details too much... things usually work out in the end, particularly when there is so much goodwill, good spirit, and good talent behind the event.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank in advance all of the people who will be traveling to/within Honduras to attend the conference. I am grateful for the sacrifice that you will make in terms of time, energy, and costs to come together and brainstorm ways to improve and expand the work that you are doing to support the people of Honduras. You are truly pioneers in the process of creating an alternative model of development for Honduras.
I would like to thank all of the contributing supporters of the conference, including Mario Gutierrez and Honduras This Week newspaper, Honduras' Institute of Tourism, Dennis Flores and Maya Temple Tours, Cerveceria Hondureņa, Hotel Marina Copan, and the Municipality of Copan Ruinas. Their support is diverse but equally invaluable to the successful staging of the conference.
I want to thank Jacobo Goldstein of HRN, as always, for his regular radio broadcasts of projecthonduras.com-related activities.
I want to thank Kathy Tscheigg of CAMO for volunteering her time and expertise to conduct the full-day workshop on sustainable programs.
I want to thank all the businesses in Honduras that are offering discounts to social tourists visiting the country. A list of those that have agreed to participate in our Social Tourism Program can be seen at http://www.projecthonduras.com/socialtourismprogram.
I want to thank Jerry and Sandra Thompson of Special Missions Foundation for... well, everything!
And I want to especially thank Sandra Guerra of Casa de Todo in Copan Ruinas. Sandra is key to making sure that the logistics of the conference take place the way they should. She is invaluable to Jerry/Sandra and me and the event.
Lastly, I want to thank the government, businesses, and people of Copan Ruinas for allowing us to invade their town once a year. I think we have a mutually beneficial relationship, but feel that we have the better end of the deal. I can't think of a more beautiful and perfect place in the world to hold the Conference on Honduras.
Forgive me if I've missed someone. I know there are many many more people who have helped out in one way or another... and I appreciate it.
Thanks, Marco
