Dear Isidra, My husband and I were in Honduras (La Ceiba and Roatan) in February/05. We were bitten (a lot) by some sort of insects that we could not see. Some people called them sand fleas, some called them sand flies, some called them noseeums. Could you tell me what they were? What problems can they cause in humans? I have developed a rash that I think might be related but the dermatologist here knows nothing about tropical diseases. Could it be chiggers??? I have read that there are 2 types of chiggers - mites found in Southern US and sand fleas found in Central America. Any information that you can give me would be very helpful. Honduras is a beautiful country. If they could solve this very annoying insect pest problem it could become a very popular tourist destination.

I'm finishing my Master degree on Medical Entomology; I am more focus on the ecology of mosquitoes, Culicoides, and similar insects. I've been trying to contact people that work in public health in my country; unfortunately, I got almost none answer. My question is, is there somebody in this group that has ongoing research related to heamatophagous insects or is planning to? > > > > Please fell free to contact me and maybe we can help each other > > > > Isidra Sabio > Graduate Student > Department of Entomology > Louisiana State University > 402 Life sciences Bldg > Baton Rouge, LA 70803 > Office: (225) 578-7229 > cellphone: (225) 252-0133 > > > > > ----------- > Yahoo! for Good > Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. > Version: 7.0.344 / Virus Database: 267.11.9/116 - Release Date: 9/30/2005 >
