Listos,
I received a message on a few days ago from my good friend Flavia Cueva of the Hacienda San Lucas (http://www.haciendasanlucas.com) just outside of Copan Ruinas. She advised me that she will be offering a 10% discount on lodging to individuals attending the Conference on Honduras 2005 (http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference), and she will also provide transportation to/from town.
Hacienda San Lucas is one of 19 businesses that are pioneering the developing of our Social Tourism Program (see http://www.projecthonduras.com/socialtourismprogram). One of the goals of the Social Tourism segment of the conference is to establish a dialogue with representatives of the tourism industry in Honduras to see how best to create an architecture for this program... an architecture that is simple, efficient, and easy to maintain.
For conferees to obtain discounts from certain businesses (hotels, restaurants, giftshops, parks, etc.) in the Copan Ruinas during the 4-5 days they will be in town should not be a particularly difficult exercise. All they have to do is say... "Hey, I'm attending the Conference on Honduras. Do I qualify for a discount at your establishment?"
In cases such as Hacienda San Lucas, Don Udo's hotel/restaurant, Twisted Tanya's restaurant, Casa de Todo giftshop, Posada Real de Copan hotel, and Hedman Alas bus service, receiving a discount should not be problematic since the managers/owners are familiar with the conference and have already offers to provide discounts to conferees.
The goal of the Social Tourism segment of the conference is to see how we expand this informal/personal system that we are creating in Copan Ruinas and apply it the Honduras as a whole without losing too much of the "personal element". In an ideal world, all social tourists (not just conferees) visiting Honduras throughout the year should receive some sort of price break as an incentive to keep returning to Honduras and to spread the word amongst their friends, relatives, and colleagues.
I want Honduras' tourism industry to appreciate just what social tourists mean both to the Honduran economy AND to the development of the country's underprivileged class and social conscience.
Thanks, Marco
