A few weeks ago, I attended a space tourism workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the discussions focused on the size of the space tourism market... how many millionaires are in the world who could afford and be willing and able to be launched into sub-orbit/orbit. Turns out that there really aren't as many as you might think. A few hundred maybe.
The question then arises... "How do go about creating a robust space tourism market?" The answer is... "Find lots of companies willing to shell out millions of dollars to sponsor people to go into space". In return, these space tourists would either wear or do something that would promote/market the company (or one of its products) they represent.
I noticed this morning that yet another individual in the US registered an Honduran to attend the Conference on Honduras 2005 (http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference). In effect, the person in the US "sponsored" the person in Honduras.
There are many non-profit organizations in the US (and elsewhere) that have established a non-profit sister organization in Honduras. Individuals from both the US and Honduras sides are working together on projects. They are learning and benefiting from each other. That's the way it should be, as no one has a corner on knowledge, experience, and wisdom.
When it comes to funding, however, it is obvious that most of it originates in the US. That's just the way it is.
I am seeing an increase in the number of times that individuals and non-profits in the US are sponsoring their friends, relatives, or counterparts in Honduras to attend the Conference on Honduras. I would like to encourage this to happen more often, so that Honduran participation in the conference can continue to expand. The Honduran perspective is greatly needed.
Unfortunately, many Hondurans are unable to come up with the $125 registration fee. That is where US (or wealthy Honduran) sponsors can play a role.
One of the best ways to empower Hondurans working on projects to help Hondurans is to give them opportunities to network and exchange information. I have found that personal contacts and knowing how to get things done are usually more effective than money.
If you know of someone in Honduras whom you think would benefit from meeting and bonding with people working on grassroots efforts to develop Honduras in the areas of education, healthcare, and community building, please consider registering them to attend the Conference on Honduras 2005 in Copan Ruinas.
To register someone online, go to http://www.specialmissions.org/volunteer_donate1.htm. When your registration form comes up, next to "Description" type in "Conference on Honduras 2005" and the name of the person you are registering. Then fill out the rest of the form.
Thanks, Marco
