Listos,
The Embassy of Honduras in Washington, DC and projecthonduras.com today agreed to work together to disseminate information on Hondurans and Honduran-Americans who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Embassy of Honduras will regularly post updates regarding Hondurans and their families on its webpage at http://www.hondurasemb.org, while projecthonduras.com (http://www.projecthonduras.com) will make available its Honduras Emergency Support Forum (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/honduras-emergency) to allow individuals and groups interested in providing support to coordinate efforts. Support can range from financial and material contributions to offers of transportation and temporary housing. The Embassy will also post their updates on the forum.
The Honduras Emergency Support Forum was originally designed to mobilize and coordinate assistance to Honduras during crises such as hurricanes, flooding, and drought. It was established following Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The forum will now be used to allow Hondurans and Honduran-Americans living in the US and around the world to respond to the emerging needs of those living along the Gulf coast of the United States.
There are more than one million Hondurans and people of Honduran ancestry living in the US alone. The state of Louisiana, and especially the city of New Orleans, has one of the oldest and largest communities of Hondurans in the US. Others cities in the US with significant Honduran and Honduran-American populations include New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, and Washington, DC.
There are 10 Honduran consulates in the US, including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. For contact information, see http://www.hondurasemb.org/visas.htm.
To subscribe to the Honduras Emergency Support Forum, send a blank e-mail message to: honduras-emergency-subscribe.....com. Key staff from the Embassy of Honduras and Honduras' consulates in the US will be on the forum to monitor the exchanges and provide up-to-date reports.
Thanks, Marco
