The current SPS airport probably is about 7 years of age---as the lower part of the terminal building was flooded by Hurricane Mitch in October/November 1998 just about the time it was opening. It was constructed adjacent to the old airport that was there from at least the 1960's. Of course, the road from the airport into SPS has changed considerably from 99% agricultural to rather developed. Changes since 1998 in the country are substantial: Modern museum in Copan Ruins (now being repaired and updated); thousands of cruise boat passengers per day into Roatan Island; environmental law strengthening and reforestation; some sources say more than 10,000 US expats living full or part time in Honduras; preservation of the clear water rafting river, Rio Cangrejal, that was going to fall to a huge dam project; incredible new hotel complex on the city beach in La Ceiba that used to be a very rundown area; worldwide focus on Honduras as a relatively inexpensive replica of Costa Rican beaches and cloud forests; lots of opportunities; etc. Kent -----Original Message----- From: Brian To: travel-to-honduras.....com Sent: Sat, 30 Jul 2005 14:31:55 -0000 Subject: [travel-to-honduras] new member Hi my name is Brian. My grandfather married a woman from Honduras. I have been there 4 times. The latest was 1998. One day i would like to go back. I would like to learn more about Honduras and what has changed since then. I have family in SPS, La Lima and Tela. How long has the airport outside of SPS been there?
