I have driven (ridden) that way... sps to La Ceiba several times.. Nothing really to be scared of... Do keep in mind, though:
a) Do not change money with the money changers at the airport... sometimes they MIGHT contact someone else in case you change a lot of money.
b) Go (make the trip) during t he daytime
c) Try not to stop at the little roadside stands... if gas or water is needed, stop at a larger gas station that you will find along the way.
