I generally don't respond to these postings I prefer to just read, however, this is truly a shame that people feel this way. If you go looking for trouble, it will find you, just as it will in any big city anywhere in the world. I was in San Pedro two weekends back and walked the streets without fear. Be smart about yourself and you will be just fine. Follow the recommendation of driving during the day.
