Hi Edward,
There are TWO cellular companies in Honduras: Megatel/Alo and Celtel/Tigo
Megatel/Alo operates GSM on the 1900 frequency.
Celtel/Tigo operates on the 850 frequency.
In contrast, Vodafone in New Zealand (your only GSM mobile provider) uses the 900 and 1800 frequencies that are common everywhere in the world (Australasia/Europe and Asia) except most of the Americas (Costa Rica is an exception... using 1800 like Europe and NZ)
You can use a United States sourced "GSM" mobile in Honduras, but it MUST be unlocked, and you can simply buy a local prepay SIM card from Alo or Tigo when you are arrive into Honduras. But your US mobile must be unlocked so that the local SIM can work.
Alternatively, you can buy an unlocked TRI band mobile. It will be 1900/1800/900. Or a QUADband which also includes the new 850 frequency (popular for old TDMA mobile providers who are switching over to GSM transmission without the normal costs of setting up from scratch).
Hope that helps!
Kind regards,
