Tricia -
There are definite problems in San Pedro Sula which originates 98% of the "bad" news out of Honduras. Outside of that area (and I'm probably not being fair to most of San Pedro Sula) I've found mainland Honduras to be a relatively safe, definitely friendly and fun place.
Roatan is a great place for scuba diving, has great fishing and beaches but has its problems too. If you were keeping up on the Roatan discussion board of late you would know that the bubble has burst there.
I prefer the lower key Central American atmosphere on the mainland with diversity of activity and culture it offers.
Every morning when I wake up to the sound of breaking Caribbean waves and walk out front to have coffee on a beautiful beach that is deserted as far as I can see each direction, I am happy not to be on Roatan knowing that I will have to run for cover when the cruise ship tourists invade later in the day.
To each his own.
