Charles, Thank you for the reply. We are just a little nervous, especially after reading the US State Dept. consular information sheets. But then if you think about all the problems you can encounter in any big city anywhere in the world, it bring it all into perspective. We will be renting a house on the beach, which has been rented before and I think we will be OK. The house is a few minutes from Masca. Hopefully we will be able to snorkle off the beach and fish off the shore. I also think Semana santa will be more people and maybe a bit safer. Thjank You for the input Scott Kornberg

I have spent a little time around Omoa and am by no means an expert on the area.
If you follow normal travel precautions I don't think you will have any problems. The Omoa area will pull a number of people for semana santa which may help.
Talk to your family doctor about diseases. On my first trip I did the whole nine yards with immunizations, malaria pills, etc. (I was told the cholera vaccine was only about 50% effective). Since then I haven't been as cautious but would rethink if I were traveling with my kids.
You will have to leave diving for your next trip, to the Bay Islands, and probably organized fishing as well.
Have fun.
