Hi everyone... We just received the following message from Liz Nutter- Valladares regarding Lucy, the little girl who received a gunshot to the head a couple of weeks ago in Copan (see story at www.projecthonduras.com/lucy.htm). It is messages such as these that confirm we are on the right track with our network. Thanks. Marco
Message from Liz:
I would like to update you on Lucy Beatriz Hernandez, who was shot in the head Aug 29 in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. After the doctors determined that more surgery was too risky to remove the remainder of a 9mm bullet lodged in her skull, she was released and returned home Monday afternoon via 3-1/2 hour ambulance ride which was paid for from funds raised to help care for her. Mrs. Aguilar (her employer), her mother & the driver accompanied her and she is now recuperating at Mrs. Aguilar's house.
I visited her Tuesday Morning and she looks great for someone who has gone through what she did. She talks although some words are not formed correctly, asks questions, sits up, walks , she recognized me immediately and laughed when my husband teased her about her new haircut (he shaves his head like Lucy he said she is now in style with him) and when he teased her about always being in style with painted fingernails. Apparently she came out in the newpaper her foto being taken with the mayor of Tegus who was visiting the hospital at the time. I have been trying to get a copy but of course that was a day Copan Ruinas did not receive the Prensa. She has had visits from international people who heard of her I believe through your website and maybe in the papers who have left her new clothes, dolls and help for the family.
Plans are to take her to Santa Rosa de Copan for rehabilitation as well as participate in the Telethon. Mrs. Aguilar is also soliciting the Muncipality for a scholarship to put her in school to at least get her to learn how to read and write (hope damage wasn't too bad, will see), and the church has taken on the task of caring for Lucy, but it looks as if Lucy is going to be able to take care of herself. She is truly La Milagro as the nurses named her in the hospital.
I just want to again thank you for all your help, and especially thank Tanya Clementsen for putting me in contact with you and your network. Dr. Beinst of Tegus was a huge help as was Dr. Castro in Copan, and many many more who I probably do not know about. The family and Mrs. Aguilar have repeatedly asked me to thank everyone. We were able to get in touch with many people and so many people responded back so quickly and I am still not sure how many contacted each other because of the information put out on the website. What you have put together is an incredible way to give and receive information (I still can't believe this is only 18 days ago, before this it would have taken weeks, possibly months). Again, thank you and your whole network.
Sincerely,
Liz Nutter-Valladares Copan Ruinas Honduras justoatiempo.....com
