Newsletter August 2004 Worldwide Outreach Services
Half of July and August were spent working in Roatan Honduras with current projects and the expansions of these projects to help more families and children in Roatan. At home in the states many donations were received for the current medical and educational programs. Without these donations we would not be able to help as many families as we have helped and continue to help. The majority of time in the states was spent soliciting donations, organizing donations for distribution and with the help of Jackson Shipping, shipping these donations to Roatan. Many thank you notes were sent to individuals and businesses for all their contributions. We continue to work on several fundraising events locally, and in various other areas in the states. During my trip I met a family who was also traveling and has decided to work with Worldwide Outreach Services on a benefit in Las Vegas. There is also a benefit being organized in Atlanta Georgia that will include several name bands that are excited about helping the people in Roatan. Locally, in Panama City Florida, we are working on a silent auction where many businesses have donated services and various items to be auctioned. There has also been a pancake breakfast and car wash sponsored by a school club. One of our sponsors (Amanda and her grandmother) is purchasing a bicycle to be raffled at Amanda's middle school. As you may realize many of these fundraising events take a lot of time coordinating and physical work to make them a success. I am so grateful that others are working together with us to help make these projects a success. We are working on adding our name to the United Way donation list. Several people have already chosen Worldwide Outreach Services as their non-profit of choice when making their donations through United Way. If you would like to support Worldwide Outreach Services through your employee donation program please list our name in the blank available for other non-profits. If needed our non- profit tax exempt number is 20-0134173. This is another way you can contribute to the families and children of Roatan. Donations from the States
Lee's Sneakers still contributes hundreds of school shoes and athletic supplies for the children in Roatan. This allows so many more children to attend school by having the required shoes, as well as, reduce the rate of infection caused by foot injuries. Baby's Nutritional Center continues to send hundred's of cans of infant formula to be used by the mothers who have been diagnosed with HIV. This helps reduce the infection rates to their newborn children. SAMS Ministry also has donated and continues to donate thousands of stuffed animals to be used for HIV testing clinics. Many people who are at high risk for HIV in Honduras would not be tested if they were not offered some type of incentive. This in itself helps reduce the risks associated with HIV, saving the lives of many children and families. I also want to send a special thank you to an individual who has worked very hard in her community in Virginia, Michele Lindren. Michele sends several boxes of children's items every month to be sent to the children and families in Roatan. This first started with her donating her daughters clothing that had been "gently used". Now living on a military base in Virginia, she has gotten other mothers there to contribute. We now receive clothing, toys, and all types of baby items from Virginia. Many more individuals send little items every month and sometime they say they wish they could send more, but many little donations add up to help many children. Sometimes 1 item for a child can make a large difference. I have been to areas in Roatan where children have no clothing because their families do not have the funds to purchase them. I have omitted these pictures from the website for confidentiality reasons, but many of these children are more than happy to receive some clothing to wear. So small donations can make a large difference in the lives of others.
Donations from Roatan
Many businesses and individual in Roatan have also made donations to help the projects and families in Roatan. Jackson Shipping has helped in so many ways by donating the shipping of these items to Roatan. Without their help we would not be able to afford to ship as many items as we do each month. They have made a tremendous difference in their own community through this service. Roatanet has helped Worldwide Outreach Services by developing our website and managing the websites day-to-day operations. With their help we have been able to show more people the needs of Roatan. And though this service many volunteers and donations have been received that would have otherwise been lost to other areas. Thanks to Roatanet we have had a record breaking month of visitors this August since the opening of our website. Judy at So Tropic in the Main Street Mall in Coxen Hole has contributed her services, as well as, made many donations to projects. She has: donated jewelry items from her shop to be used for HIV testing clinic's in all of the Bay Islands, donated monetary funds to ship 100 pairs of children's shoes, donated baby items and money to help baby "K" who weighed three and a half pounds at six weeks of age, who has recently had a shunt placement done on the mainland, donated several Worldwide Outreach Service shirts that have been given to various businesses and individuals that have made donations, she donated lodging for my last 3 week trip in Roatan at the Mayan Princess. Nancy at Tropicana Beach Club donated lodging for my last trip in June. Nancy also continues to help mother's and premature and failure to thrive children at her resort through her Littlest Angels program. Dan at Dan's Place at the airport in San Pedro Sula, and Jana Eylands at Lawson Rock Realty both have made generous monetary contribution to our programs helping the families and children in Roatan. Sidewalkmystic.com has also contributed monetary donations and continues to contribute on a consistent basis. David, who wrote The Judas Bird, continues to donate to our programs through any books he sells through our web site as well as place Worldwide Outreach Services book marks in all the books he sells. Paradise Computers supports our programs by donating free computer time during my visits allowing me to correspond with contributors and volunteers during my travels. Roatan Bruce supports Roatan by having us on his radio show during our visits, helping to inform many of the people of the issues and projects that are currently in progress. In the near future he should have clips of the live radio broadcasts at his web site www.roatanbruce.com. Thank you to all the businesses and individuals in Roatan who support our programs helping the families and children in your community. Please thank these businesses by supporting them. They all have links on the supporting business page of Worldwide Outreach Services website www.outreach-services.org
Families Saludables Program This program is operated by the hard work and dedication of Valerie Nelson. The goals of this program include HIV prevention and testing to pregnant mother's and their small children in Roatan. She also has had many successful testing clinics' in the other Bay Islands to help reduce the rate of HIV in these areas as well. As she works with the many families in Roatan and the other Bay Islands HIV prevention and education are the key to the reduction of HIV. Thus saving the many lives of children who are at high risk for developing this deadly virus. She works with the families using the utmost confidentiality giving them donated medicines; nutritional items such as donated formula and vitamins, educational support and many hugs and shoulders to lean on as needed. This program continues to need many items to enhance and save the lives of children and families. Please visit our website at www.outreach- services.org to see a list of the items needed for this program.
Miss Peggy's Clinic Miss Peggy's clinic is a free clinic in Sandy Bay, Roatan that currently operates in the downstairs of Peggy's home. Patients line up at Miss Peggy's door beginning in the early hours of the morning. The 30+ patients are assessed and treated for many medical illnesses every morning with follow-ups scheduled as needed. Most of these families would not be able to receive the medical care needed if Miss Peggy was not available. Recently land has been donated to build a clinic in the La Colonia area of Sandy Bay. This project started as a medical clinic for the area of La Colonia. But many others have become interested in this project and have donated land, funds and materials to expand this project. The project now will include a dental clinic, community center, a daycare center, kindergarten and a free lunch program for the children. During my last trip, a meeting was held with an individual that would like to donate and expand this project even further. It is their hope to include an arts & crafts trade school that will have volunteers and others from Copan to help teach Honduran arts and crafts to the people of Roatan. We would like to incorporate some other similar programs in Roatan in this trade school if possible. It has also been suggested to include the adults in this trade school in the free lunch program and give them "start up supplies" to start their own businesses throughout Roatan. The other area of the project that we hope to expand is a school from elementary through high school. This reduces the likelihood of any accidents with children crossing that busy area of the road where they currently need to attend school everyday. This should help the overcrowding of other schools in Roatan, giving some relief to the teachers. During my next trip in September it is one of the goals of Worldwide Outreach Services to work with the interested individual's and have this program continue as planned. Construction has started but is working at a very slow pace, as does most everything in Roatan. The land has been cleared sparing the trees in the area so as not to cause any run off problems keeping Roatan's beaches a beautiful place for all visitors and those living there. Footers have been placed for the clinic. We are currently waiting to have a concrete culvert installed to keep the water running naturally as before so as to reduce any flooding problems in the rainy season. It is also Worldwide Outreach Services hope after completion of this project to "franchise" and build other projects such as this in other areas of Roatan. If anyone is interested in helping with this program with construction or any type of donation please let Peggy in Sandy Bay know or contact me through the our web site www.outreach-services.org and look at the current needs for this clinic.
Mud Angels Program This program is operated by the hard work and dedication of Nancy Agnew. Through this program many children are supplied with the necessary supplies and clothing to attend school. Many volunteers are needed to assist in the schools helping to lower the teacher student ratio giving the children a better opportunity for learning. Bilingual volunteers are needed to help teach the teachers English so that they are capable of teaching a class with the knowledge of both languages. This has been issued through the school system in Roatan that all teachers need to attend English classes. Many teachers are needed to help teach English as a second language. If anyone has an interest in helping please let Nancy know or contact me through our web site www.outreach-services.org There is also a list of items that are needed for this program on the website.
