    Tor,

I can only speak for my experiences on Roatan. The ATMs do work, but you
should be prepared in the event of a communications problem. I have not
had any problems going into a bank and withdrawing money from my credit
card. I've even obtained US dollars upon presenting my passport.
Traveller's checks work fine. I would suggest getting American Express
checks but I have used Visa traveller's checks without a problem. The
dive shop on Roatan that I used (Las Rocas) does take credit cards and I
believe others do as well. Some shops and restaurants will add a 3-5%
surcharge for credit card transactions to cover exchange and bank fees.
It's well worth it from my perspective to have the convenience of a card.
Depending on where you are going, having some small US dollar bills for
tipping is a good idea. Take standard precautions when carrying your
money and you'll be fine. One last thing, you don't say where you're
coming from so I don't know what your home currency is. In Honduras, US
dollars are fine most anywhere but you will most likely get Lempiras for
change. Other major currencies (pounds sterling, euros) might only be
    exchanged at a major bank.

    Have a great trip!
