Hi David, 1. Products with high precentages of EOs that repel biting insects and that are in a carrier that stays on the skin work for as long as products with DEET in my experience. Even DEET based products have to be reapplied after swimming and out door activity where the skin has become moist. 2. The ones with the highest percentage of DEET work the best. Like Muskol which use to be made in Canada, but rumor is that Canada has banned all DEET products. The next best I used was Deep Woods Off, which can be found most of the time at Eldons. 3. Don't know about the garlic and vitamin B. Nutrition author Andrew Weil, MD reccomends a clove of raw garlic daily as an antioxident. 4. There is a product that can be bought from a pharmacy here that does not require a perscription here and is probably much less expensive than in the US. I have heard that it is most effective. I will have to look up the name of it in some old emails and when I do I will pass it on. What I use for the bits are my bug repellent as the water based fomular has an astringent in it which sooths the skin. Also, it has a couple of EOs that are either intended to soothe the skin are cool the itch. Over and above this, I use Teatree EO for it's antiviral properties and cininimon for its anti bacterial properties and I use them neet directly on the bite. There are other EOs with anti bacterial properties, but few as high as the TeeTree for the antiviral. I did not personally find that the over the counter creams did much for the itch. I have also found that lavender oil works wonderfully on the tiny jellyfish stings (soothes and eliminates with use 4 X per day). I can't compare it with the perscription ointment, as I did not have it available. Again, the over the counter ones did not work on those stings, either. 5. The Honduran government is testing a products on West Bay Beach. They have been presented as environmental safe as is available. I think that 2 different products is being used - one on the beach itself and then another back off the beach. The one being used back off the beach becomes toxic when the foliage on which it is on is burned. So the project manager has met with property owners to coordinate this project. Hope this helps, Linda Kay "Hennings, David" wrote: Ok, let's address this issue one more time on this board for mosquito/sand flies.
1 Does anything other than DEET really work for more than a short period of time?
2. Also what are the best Deet products people have found?
3. What about taking vitamin B/garlic?
4. What is the best treatment for the itch after getting bit?
5. What has been the best treatment for a whole beach to reduce/eliminate sand fly population for those of you who are resort owners (that is still somewhat environmentally sensitive...)?
Judith gave the best response I have seen. I have pasted it below but I would also be interested input from others. Thanks. David Dear Group: To those who get bitten...
....Only for those of you who will use prescription drugs. This is the name of a little tube of ointment that takes the bite out of the bite! Sometimes almost immediately!
.... Clobetasol Propionate Cream USP, 0.05%
Because of my extreme allergic reaction to the bites, we stopped building our house in Roatan. Then, since my husband and I just couldn't give this up, we went to our dermatologist. The skin doctor prescribed this ointment for me and said it was 100 times more effective than hydrocortisone. I recommend this highly for those of you who have such a difficult time with the mosquitos and sand fleas (or whatever you want to call those guys you don't see). This is a prescription so I emphasize that you check with your doctor first. In Roatan, if your doctor says it's OK for you to use it, no prescription is required. We bought the ointment for just under $2.50 at
the drug stores in Coxen Hole.
Directions: Put just a little on the end of your little finger and dot on the bite...don't rub or put a lot on...use just a tiny bit for each bite.
My opiinion is that you use this in combination with: Take odorless garlic SOFTGEL (softgel doesn't come back up on you!) - 3 1000 mgs a day (I take Spring Valley).......then also take 100 mg of vitamin B-1 a day. Start taking this as soon as you plan a trip to the tropical climate and continue to take it as long as you are there. Please note that you must talk to your doctor about anything that is different than your normal intake of vitamins. For me, this combination of changing my internal system slowly with the pills and then having an ointment to put on when the bugs do bite has made living in Roatan a miracle...I do get some bites still but the reaction is much much less and then the ointment takes the miserable bite out of the
bites. For me, the bite lasts for 24 hours or so and then subsides completely.
Daily I put on Skin So Soft or Cactus Juice and spray something with Deet for the early morning or twilight times, but that in the past didn't do it. Now, the combination of everything works WONDERS.
What I am telling you is something I've waited to say. First, I wanted to test it myself when we were there in March, then I wanted to give the ointment to friends while we were there who then used it. All but one where amazed at the results. This worked even for a little guy who was stung in the water...in minutes he was fine.
Since then I've ordered Safe Sea (sunblock with jellyfish and sea lice sting protective lotion). It's not yet tested against Portugese man-o'was and Box Jellyfish.
Order, email: mail.....com Phone: 1-888-400-8400 which is Lifestyles Direct, the authorized distributor
This I have not used yet. It should be obvious that you would not use this and then go into jellyfish infested water. But for those who are sensitive to anything, this also may be of help.
We'll be back in Roatan in May and June as our house PROGRESSES, yes we're building again. I'll give you an update on all this and hopefully some of you out there will find visiting and living amongst the little creatures
much less of a problem. I know I sure have!
Cheers and blessings,
Judy Allred

Thanks Linda! I will check out those places if BIBR does not carry your products. Looking forward to it! Thank you again! I am a bit negligent in my marketing rounds, I,m sorry to say. I went by Bay Island Beach Resort to see if they would like to carry it in their gift shop, but I did not catch the person who made those types of decisions. I will continue to try and hopefully they will have it in stock when you arrive. Currently, Cayuco's in West End has it and AKR's snack shop are the two closest places at this point. > > Delight in the Earth > Linda Kay > www.tropicalislandvilla.com > > >
