You can get a basic room at Hotel San Pedro (safe and clean, but definitely not an American standard room by any means)- don't confuse it with Hotel GRAN SULA... that is an expensive one. Hotel San Pedro is near the Centre, taxi's know it... basic room around 20$ max, I believe. I've stayed there many many times both in my backpacking days and more recently with my husband and girls... it's not fancy, but it's safe and it does the trick.
Good luck on your trip!
