I was told that direct flights are always more expensive than connecting
flights.
I got these quotes from Continental last year.
Tegus - Houston - San Diego - Houston - Tegus = $800 (purchased on x day)
Houston - Knoxville - Houston= $800 (a month after x day)
San Diego - Houston - Knoxville - Houston - San Diego = $300 (same day as
last one)
After much aguing with the reservations agent over the phone that I wanted
another San Diego - Knoxville ticket for the same day as my original one
(cause I could want more room!! ) they finally added Houston - Knoxville -
Houston to my original itinerary for $300 plus the $100 change fee.
Even the reservation agent was confused as to the reasoning behind this
pricing and tried to explained that it was due to connecting flights...but
still it's wayyyyy too much.
Anyhow, I don't find your finding ilogical at all. I've come to expect such
thing from airlines in general. specially where there is more competition
(like in SPS).
