Hi everyone,
A few days ago, I e-mailed to the network a question regarding entry into Honduras for individuals with a US passport. The question had to do with the length of time for which the passport had to be valid in order to be allowed entry into Honduras.
I received about a dozen responses. About half said that so long as the passport were valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry, it was okay. About half said that the passport had to be valid for at least another 6 months to be allowed entry. Several noted that individuals who were traveling with them as part of a mission team were not allowed to board the plane by the airline because their passport would expire in less than 6 months (but more than 3 months).
Clearly, there is considerable confusion here. It is further complicated by the fact that getting US passports renewed these days has become a nightmare for people. Passport renewals are taking more than 3 months due to homeland security red tape within the US government agencies charged with passport oversight.
Today, I called the Honduran Embassy in Washington, DC. I also talked to contacts at the Honduran Consulate here. Both the embassy and the consulate state Honduran law requires at least 3 months, not 6.
I also talked by phone with Hassan Elouad of American Airlines in Ft. Forth, TX. Hassan is a Senior International Analyst for the company. His telephone number is (817) 967-2657. Hassan went into the Sabre computer reservations system/global distribution system (GDS) and check the entry requirements for Honduras. He confirmed that a US passport valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry into Honduras is sufficient.
The problem travelers have experienced has been due to misinformed airline personnel. If you have any problems in the future and you find yourself at an airport at risk of being left behind because your passport is not at least 6 months valid, please ask someone at the airline to go into the Sabre computer system and double check the requirements.
Also, refer them to the US State Department's webpage at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1135.html , where 3 months is clearly stated.
Also refer them to the website for the Embassy of Honduras in Washington, DC... http://www.hondurasemb.org ... Tell them to scroll down to the bottom of the opening page.
Seems pretty clearcut to me.
Regards, Marco
