Dan,
Did you get more than one quote on the duty? I read that the highest duty on luxury cars was 30%, not 50%, which is in line with what I would have been charged on my Jeep if I hadn't had a dispensa. The car cost $34,000 and the duty was calculated at around $12,000, but that was in 2001, before CAFTA. BTW, they calculated the duty as though it was a new car, even though it was a 2000 model and I bought it in 1999. They used a 2-year-old blue book to calculate the value of my husband's car! Anyway, that's all old stuff and I thought the duty on autos had been reduced with CAFTA.
All I'm saying is that I wouldn't rely on what one person tells you.
There may be someone on our Honduras Living group who has more recent experience in importing a car if you'd like to ask there. I'm sorry that you've had this bad news.
