In the US, AAA issues an International Drivers Permit
(IDP,) which I have, and while it's not required in
every country, I have found it useful because it
enumerates (in 10 languages) the driver's information
and indicates which countries are signatories to the
UN convention(s) on road traffic. It can also be
helpful in a situation where an officer wants to
confiscate your license due due to a driving
violation. (You can give them your IDP instead of
your US license.)
