I imported a 1997 Toyota 4Runner in December 2003 and it was about $3500. I imported a 2003 Ford F-150 in March 2006 and it was just shy of $3000. Older vehicles import more cheaply than newer. Trucks import more cheaply than SUV's or cars. I drove both cars down from the states and did the aduana stuff in Cortes. Both times my agent charged less than 1500 Lempiras for running the paperwork gauntlet.
The first time I was really taken by surprise that after all the paperwork was done I still had to go to DEI in San Pedro to get my plates. That place is a zoo. I stood in the wrong line multiple times and was growing very frustrated when I was approached by a tramitadore. He just sort of (gently) pried the papers from my hand and bade me to follow him. He took care of everything in an hour or so, including running around and getting copies made, typing up all the paperwork and standing in line. He told me to go get something to eat and he would call me when it was done. When I asked what I owed, he told me to just pay what it was worth to me. I gave him 300 lemps and felt pretty bad about it later when I realized it ws probably worth more to me than I had paid.
I called him two and a half years later about my truck (he still had the same cell phone number!) and he took all the paperwork from me through the window of my vehicle on the street in front of DEI, called me two hours later and guided me straight into the lot without having to wait in that line on the street and had me sign some papers while the inspectors did their thing. I left the car there and went to get something to eat. An hour later he called me back and gave me my permiso to drive without plates. I gave him 500 lemps that time. I went back twice to have the permiso renewed and he refused money each time. When I finally got my plates he said I could buy lunch for him and his crew if I wanted to, but there was no extra fee. He also had all the paperwork filled out so I could get my new RTN. I expect that he will have it waiting the next time I go to San Pedro.
If anyone has to go to SPS to get plates, or DEI for any reason, I highly recommend this guy. His name is Santos and I will be happy to give you his phone number.
