I agree. It is really a pretty easy drive from the airport to La Ceiba but I feel much more comfortable in Ceiba using taxis and not worrying about the rental car. I don't like getting pulled over by police when I am driving the rental car. You are really "at their mercy". Taxis in and around Ceiba are everywhere and they are very cheap and efficient. In Ceiba La Quinta is a GREAT hotel for a moderate price and Coco Pando is nice, on the beach, and very reasonable. I frankly don't like driving in or around San Pedro Sula, the whole Ceiba scene is much better for me.

Are you accustomed to driving in developing countries? If not, you may want to reconsider and either fly or take the bus to La Ceiba, especially since you don't speak Spanish very well. There are very few road signs along the way. A major turn that you have to make in El Progreso (a left at the dove of peace statue) is not marked at all. There are no good maps. Driving styles are very different here, especially in the towns. It would be easy to get lost in La Ceiba if you have never driven here before. In fact, it would be easy to miss the turn off the main road if you don't know where you are going. You don't even need a car in La Ceiba, as the taxis are cheap and plentiful. It is a very pretty drive from San Pedro to La Ceiba, and you could also hire a van or taxi driver right outside the terminal in San Pedro Sula. That would cost about $150, but it would be less than a rental car for several days.
I would also recommend the Gran Hotel Sula. It is slightly past its prime, but it is nice and has a pool.

Hi All, My husband Rick and I have booked our tickets and reading everything we can get our hands on preparing for our first trip to Honduras in March. We are flying into San Pedro and plan to rent a car (one way)and drive to Le Ceiba..look at real estate and puddle around and then go on to Roatan. We have spent a lot of time in Belize and loved it, but found the islands a bit to "over done" Our hope is that we will find that this is the place that we could retire to..suggestions please We are looking for suggestions for a hotel in San Pedro and on Roatan. Has anyone rented a car one way before..anything to watch out for?? Our spanish is very very weak..we will be taking classes seriously if we fall in love with this country. Suggestions Please Liz Briardale www.briard.com > com/>
