brake pads and brake pump seem like they can fit inside your luggage, get them washed well and I think you won't have trouble with the airline.

BTW, i have a classic too. 1980 Datsun 210.. LOL.. I still drive it every day cuz my wife knows only automatic so she took over my Lancer..LOL

I am not good at the bribing thing and have not done it since 1993 when I
got stoped in a car without seat belts.

Our weed cutter was small compared to our regular luggage, it was in its
original packaging, brand new and yes it had a gas tank, which of course was
empty. Traveling via air in and out of the US has become such a pain since
9/11. My german family and friends avoid coming over here as much as
    possible.
I want to bring mostly brake parts, not necessarily pads but everything
else. I was told I need a brake pump and I want to change the parts just
inside of the wheels where there seems to be some fluid leaking. The car is
a 1982 model, let's just say its on the verge of becoming a classic. hahaha.
I appreciate the hint about getting the parts washed at a garage, I never
thought of that before. Plastic bags as suggested might keep in oder but
will of course be opened just as the box from home depot was. I'll call the
airline too and hope they have something positive to say.

Thanks for all the good tips,
    Sabine
