Thank you for sharing that real life experience. I had a feeling after watching that tv show that sat phones weren't as reliable as a cellphone. Initially I just expected delays but they seem to be unreliable like you say in bad weather, probably when you need it most huh?
I guess with no other option available, one would have to just keep trying until the batteries run out or you get your message across.

Hi there,
My husband has deployed to Iraq a few times to places where there was not existing telephone service, and on occasion had the chance to call me on the satellite phone they had with them. He did find he got the best reception outside his tent, and sometimes he had to walk around the base to try to get good signal. I can tell you from experience that this phone was SUPER frustrating: it cut out more times than it stayed connected. Sometimes his calls would be clear JUST long enough to hear his voice, then the signal would go (and a voice recording would tell me the call had been lost). I had only ONE good chance to talk to him (out of about 15-20 times he called) where the signal was completely clear and uniterupted for over an hour (on my birthday, of all times!!) I am 99% sure that his unit had the VERY best phones available on the market.
He had a local cellphone (Iraqi) that he bought, and that did MUCH better than the Sat phone.... I know that may not be an option for those of you looking into the Sat phone, but just from my experience, the Sat phone is very unreliable (esp if there are any clouds/increment weather!)
