Hi Carla,
I recommend not going into SPS, which is a little on the edgy side, but to go to Progresso for your first night. It is not much further and on the way to the north coast, where you are going anyways as it sounds. There is a very friendly rental car service in Progresso which we used many times. Ask for Elvis, who speaks perfect english. He and his sister manage the place, they are both extremely ethical. Elvis met us at the airport, no problem. So there is no need to deal with the rental agency at the airport when you come in. Everything can be arranged before you get there, you will be picked up and delivered at your hotel, there are a number of places to choose from. No need to deal with honduran traffic after dark upon your arrival.
Let me know, whether that sounds interesting to you and I put you in touch, Sabine
P.S. There is no money in it for me. They just helped us so much. Elvis actually helped us to buy our own car, putting himself out off a rental customer.
