    Hi all,

when we first started going to Tela on the north coast in 1993 it was a very
safe place. We would walk along the beach all the way out to the Garifuna
villages and back. no problem. We see children and woman walk along the
beach everyday, alone or in groups. something i could never let my son do
    here in san francisco.

Then for a while there were incidences on the beach at night, and the tela
beach got a bad reputation in some of the travel guide books. A few years
ago the last president put a tourist police into place, which was well
trained by some very capable police from the capital. they have bikes,
motorcycles and atvs and control the beach all the way out to our
neighborhood of paraiso. we also have a police station a block down the road
from us. they either do foot patropls or drive around in a vw bug. the
security situation seems really good right now. walking alone during the day
and in groups at night is no problem. in 14 years we have never been mugged
or had anything stolen, except for some fruit from a very popular tree in
    our garden.

this being the mainland there is always a possibility for outside people to
come in. local residents are concerned about the los micos resort
development, because they fear that besides tourist this will attract petty
thieves and other unsavory people to the area. but who knows when that thing
    will actually be built.
