If you have lived around the world I think you will find traveling throughout Honduras similar. Like Mexico it is mostly sleepy with some exceptions. Keep your head up and travel during the day. Be careful when you are out at night especially when you are alone. There are parts of San Pedro Sula and Tegoose and Progresso that are gang controlled and VERY dangerous. I wouldn't think you would have any reason to be in there. If you travel to Copan, Ceiba, Comayagua etc they are relatively safe but because of the poverty of the country you must always be careful. We have never felt threatened down there but have always been with small groups of adult guys. We have had an encounter with the police that was scary which is why I asked if you speak Spanish. When u r driving keep all documentation with you in case they pull you over. The islands seem MUCH safer than the mainland. I have only been to Roatan, not Utila but that was much nicer and safer, at least on the beach areas than the mainland.
