    Andrea:
We found that we purchased a Nokia phone here and took it to Honduras AFTER we had it unlocked by a local shop. Cingular, Sprint and Nextel WOULD NOT UNLOCK IT for us.I paid $20.00 to have it done. They plug it into a computer and punch in a code to unlock it. My source tells me that all the phones come from the factory UNLOCKED, but then the telephone service LOCKS it so you have to use their service.
I first obtained a Mot 557 whick could NOT be unlocked, then after my eduation I purchased the Nokia phone, with extra internal antena ,and then purchased a SIM card ( about $5.00 USD) & prepaid minutes in LaCieba at the local phone company, We had NO problems with the phone there. We really like the reception on the Nokia, we tried it here in Texas and it worked MUCH better than the Motorola here, so we decided to not even take the Mot to Honduras with us. Just remember the phone MUST BE UNLOCKED TO USE ANOTHER PHONE COMPANY with your phone.

Roatan. I was going to buy a couple of phones to take down to some
of my friends on the island. Verizon told me that they only sell
dual band, not quad band and that NO Verizon phone will work in
Central America. I was told that Motorola would work, but they
would not unlock it for me. They told me I had to go to another
shop and pay 50 USD to have it unlocked before I left the US.
