Hi Charly,
Last year we took our cell-phones to Tela for 5 months. Before leaving San Francisco we did a lot off running around to get our cell-phones unlocked. (of course those cell phone providers that sell calling plans don't really want to make that easy for you to do).
Many stores in the small town of Tela sold sim cards, even vendors on the street did. Calling cards are available in every corner store, after all almost everybody has cell phones now, because it is still difficult do get a land-line from Hondutel.
I did a little research on what band-width we would need and I deceided I needed at least a tri-band or quad-band, I think honduran frequency is 925( but I have forgotten by now).
Anyways, when we were in Tela and shopping around for a two-way radio, another way to avoid calling card, we found an excellent store right in our little town of Tela. The owner's son took a lot of time discussing all sorts of options with us, and it turned out he could have unlocked our phone for us as well.
I am still curious to hear more about satellite phone, does anybody know more about initial costs, availability?
Thanks, Sabine >From: "Charlie" >Reply-To: travel-to-honduras.....com >To: travel-to-honduras.....com >Subject: [travel-to-honduras] Re:Phone Calls >Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2006 12:01:00 -0000 > >Angel - > >It is my understanding that the two service providers in Honduras, >Celtel and Claro, work on the 850 and 1900 frequencies, respectively, >same as the US, so that if you have an Unlocked GSM phone running on >those frequencies they can work in Honduras.
