Agreed. Bananarama and the whole West Bay area of Roatan give a great
feeling of safety. The guards make patrols at night and all of the hotels
there have figured out the we Gringos want to fell secure when we are
visiting. It has got to have some of the most beautiful beaches and best
    diving and snorkeling around.

We have been very careful on the mainland and that is important. Most of
our work is done during the day. The mainland, especially San Pedro Sula
and Tegoose are very different than Roatan in terms of safety. The Maras
(gangs) are the main problem. They are a very real issue.

We stayed at the Bananarama in August. A guard was posted at the entrance
of the beach. We felt safe even being out with our children at night. The
guards presence helped when we had a minor problem with a fishing boat. The
guards that I saw were low-key and appeared to be a way to provide some
peace of mind to the tourists.

I know people had talked about being concerned about crime in Honduras, but
we were on the mainland and Roatan for 10 days without seeing anything
serious as far as crime (the driving was crazy). I am a police officer so
crime was something that I was expecting to see; we really had a great time.
