Hi Megan,
I have been going to Honduras for years and have been on nature walks in many protected areas, I have never encountered the legendary large spiders. In a restaurant one time however another patron was describing how he killed a large spider as big as his fist in his house. This story forever scared my now 11 year old son. So in oder to help him with his fears, we educated ourselves on those cute arachnids and actually found out that the bigger the spider the less venomous it is. The little black widow we have here in California is a lot more poisonous than those tarantulas.
Don't worry and enjoy your travels. I can tell you will be very well prepared. I have been enjoying your dicussion on this list and I have learned a lot.
