Check with the airline about the size and weight of your suit if they will let you bring it in the airplane's cabin. If your suitcase is within those limits then that is the best way to go. Downside is you will have to carry it around with you everywhere you go, if you have connecting flights you will have to get it in and out of the airplane and carry it to the other gate ,etc. It does get tiring if you have to walk a lot, even if they roll. even 2 hours carring a notebook on my shoulder and the thing starts to feel like it's made out of bricks.
I've travelled a lot and i've had my bags being lost only once and it was on a really complicated trip involving 2 airlines. From last year to this year the bag weight limit has been lowered from 75 to 50 pounds. If you bag weights more than 50 pounds you'll pay a penalty. During the peak season they also have a limit of 2 bags per passenger.
This is not good from a passenger point of view if you want to bring a lot of stuff but allows the airlines to make sure that they can load up all the bags if they all weight the max limit.
SO, if you can't bring the suitcase into the cabin, have consolation that the stories you hear are a small fraction of a percent of all the bags that airlines handle every day. Most of the bags do make it to the destination at the same time with their owner. If you do have very important papers or medications put them in your purse (check the security restrictions about liquids, it's a new thing).
Have a good trip.

This was very helpful advice! Thank you! One question about the checking of the bags though...I am just planning on bringing a purse and one suitcase. I will put that suitcase above me right on the plane? I'm a bit worried about my bag not getting there because I've heard many stories. I just am hoping this trip will be smooth!
Thanks!
