Comayaguela is the sister city to Tegucigalpa. We generally refer to both of them as Tegucigalpa when refering to the capital city. There is actually no separate mayor for Comayaguela and Tegucigalpa, there is one mayor for what is called "Central District" or it's nickame "Tegus" that includes both.
Tegucigalpa itself is the smaller and older one of both. Most of the historic stuff is in Tegucigalpa. Comayaguela is much larger and covers out to the suburbs. Some people say "Comayaguela" only to a small section of Comayaguela that is next to Tegucigalpa. That area has the markets and a lot of auto part stores , used clothed stores,etc. that would be the area you have been warned about. However many many other parts of Comayaguela are safer, but they are not called Comayaguela by the locals, but instead we say the neighborhood names. The perception you got about Comayaguela could come from referring only to that section. It's a common mistake from someone trying to give advice without realizing what is the real size of Comayaguela. Right now Tegus has about 1 million people living here.It is a big city.
So, your fiance could be right. With more specifics about where you will be staying in Comayaguela we could confirm you if it is generally safe. Don't get nervous, get informed and you'll be ok and have a good time while you are here. It's not Iraq, it's more like Detroit or New York City .
