Subject: [travel-to-honduras] La Ceiba and Helping Honduras Kids

    Hi all,
I have lived in La Ceiba for 30 years, most of that time working with Dole in their Research Department. For a number of years, I have been helping the SOS Childrens Village near here, but new SOS rules have made that very difficult.

I have incorporated an organization called Helping Honduras Kids (HHK), with a counterpart Honduran non-profit called Ayudando Niņos Hondureņos (ANH). HHK has just received 501(c)3 tax exempt status.

HHK is partnering with the Lisa Lopes Foundation to operated a Childrens Home (Hogar de Amor), in Agua Caliente near to Jutiapa, and about 30 minutes from La Ceiba. In addition, we are building a Jungle School in the Cangrejal River area, about 15 minutes up the river road. In the beach town of El Porvenir, we plan to build a nutrition and day care center. There are 3 Grandmas in El Porvenir/El Naranjo (Porvenir on the beach, Naranjo in the mountains), who between them have 35 children. We are helping these Grandmas in order to try and keep these children in their communities and well looked after.

For the Jungle School/kindergarden and the Grandmas kids, we are looking for sponsors for each of >80 children at $25/child/mo. Information can be seen at the website indicated below. One little 4-yr-old girl walks 2 hours each way on a slippery mountain path to attend our Saturday kindergarden class.

For those who live in the La Ceiba area or are planning a move here, we need help with these programs for disadvantaged children. If you can help us to help children, please call me at 443-1209, 991-5866 or via my Vonage phone 1-714-277-3601 (this is a Ca area code, but it rings in Honduras). You can also write me at this email address or at utilacays.....com.

We would be very happy to have your help with our programs and/or in sponsoring a child. We have help from Standard Fruit Company (Dole) and other organizations, but we are short on personnel locally who are willing to devote some time with our construction and with our children.

    Thanks for your consideration,
