Hi Korner, In answer to your questions ... How much is the ferry from La Ceiba to Utila? >>I'm not sure, since I never do boats! I get seasick just looki= ng at calm water. I know it's cheap. I'm sure someone else on this list will= be able to fill you in on the ferry prices. Dean, are you out there?! Would I be better off staying on Roatan and doing day visits? >> If you only have 5 or 6 days total for your trip, I would sug= gest you just pick one island. I think you'll feel 'rushed' if you try and cram = in two islands in such a short visit. (my opinion). If you have about 10 days,= I would suggest a couple of days on Utila and the rest of Roatan. Keep in min= d, if you travel by ferry to/from Utila, you will have to travel back and forth t= o LaCeiba and then out to Roatan or visa versa. The travel time on the ferry = from Utila to LaCeiba is about an hour and a half (I'm guessing on this) and it'= s another 2 hours from La Ceiba to Roatan. So, if you travel by ferry, you wi= ll be spending a lot of your time on a boat or sitting around waiting for a boat.= Another thing you might consider is the new Princess ferry from Utila = to LaCeiba. They have an early morning departure and you would be able to catc= h a morning flight from LaCeiba to Roatan (about a 15 min flight costing about = $25 or $30 - again, don't quote my on this price, but from LaCeiba to Roatan, i= t's cheap and you don't need reservations. SOSA, Atlantic, Taca/Isle=F1a) You said if you went back you would check out one of the smaller islands...which one? Is it known for good snorkeling? >> I'm not sure what the names are (or if they even have names).=
There are hundreds of little islands around Utila but none that you can sta= y on. Once you're in Utila, you'll find notices posted by locals or bars that off= er day trips, including boat trip, BBQ, drinks, or just boat trip out and back= to one of these smaller cayes. Utila, itself, is not known for it's snorkeling. It's much more popula= r with divers, although you can snorkel from shore. It was our opinion, Roata= n was nicer for snorkeling. If/when we return to Utila (and some day we will) we=
probably wouldn't snorkel at all. We would probably just hang in a hammock = and be lazy, check out the iguana station, pig out on the best gelato ever and=
people watch over. Any info on the whale watching trips? >> There are no wahle watching trips. There happens to be some w= hale sharks in this vacinity of the Bay Islands. At certain times of t= he year, they can be spotted while out diving. For those divers, I understand = it's a real thrill. (We don't dive and unfortunately, we've never seen a wh= ale shark.) Is Utila known for more bugs than Roatan? >> In my opinion ... no more - no less. We found just as m= any sandflies on the beach in Utila as on Roatan. The thing Utila has goin= g for it is that the main street through the center of town, which is where every= thing is located, is concrete. There is not as much sand or beach areas, so = maybe there are a few less sandflies. It is our opinion, the mosqu= itoes were worse on Utila than Roatan and with the first hint of sundown, fo= und them to be extremely bothersome. I'm no expert on Utila, since we've only been there once, but I&n= bsp; hope I've helped a little. Any other questions, feel free to post them. I'm= sure there are others out there who can put in their two cents as well - or feel= free to contact me off the list. Enjoy! Sue ( sep.....net )
