This last post was very disheartening. I am 34 months away from retirement (when I get that youngest child raised) and this post tells me that it won't be too much longer before beach property on the mainland is no longer affordable. I do not live on either coast of the U.S. so won't have half a mil in equity to put down just for a little plot alongside the beach. Real disheartening.
Those folks out on the islands should stay out there, otherwise they will simply run up property values as has happened in Costa Rica.
Give me some good news here, please.

I certainly would suggest you make contact with a Honduran attorney ASAP to understand the various residency types--from investor, to employee, to rentista, to pension. You can try www.Fdanzilo.....hn as one of the good residency attorneys.

I don't know about licensing here as a psychologist. Your attorney could help you. Probably working low key out of your house or through non Engish speaking psychologist in La Ceiba who want to help expats that are having trouble in paradise, is one approach.

You can do volunteer work without a residency, staying in the country for the period of time they give you when you arrive.

Ceiba has many nice houses to rent in the $500 to $800 per month range---El Sauce, Naranjal, Toronjal. The trick is its tough to rent something for six months if you haven't first seen it. So, you may have to chance coming here to a hotel and then finding the perfect place. Playa Helen's has some nice, small apartments (1-2 bedrooms) on or near the beach for aboout $550 per month. Many people building here, stay there.

There are a number of good Spanish schools here.

Come as early as possible, the boomers are moving all over Honduras scoping out great places such as La Ceiba to live and invest. Where there was no problem to buy a beautiful beach lot outsie of La Ceiba for $40,000 last year, its tough to find them at $80,000 now. Of course, compared to $400,000 on Roatan, they still are bargains. Actually, a lot of buyers are people from Roatan selling at what they see are peak prices and just with their profits buying something larger here in Ceiba.

There have been some comments by others about wanting to buy outside of a gated community. Some say they don't want restrictions on what they do and some feel that they will be in a gringoized community and want local life. That's good; but remember there is NO zoning in Honduras. So, if you don't buy enough land to insulate yourself, you could have a three story hotel on your boundary blocking your view, or a small chicken enterprise, etc. Gated communities provide the equivalent of zoning, organized security, organized utilities, and most have mixed expats and Hondurans and Europeans. see www.MangoTreeVillas.com and www.BocaVieja.com

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. My husband, Fred, and I are moving to
Honduras in about six months so I have a few questions. We've decided not
bring bring anything but our cats, laptops -- really they are our laptops
:>) -- and three outfits of clothing! So this is going to be an exciting
adventure for us. We're considering leceib since it looks quite interesting
    and affordable.

How difficult will it be to get work permits and residency? Fred is a
psychologist and would like to do a part time practice. We will have to
learn about licensure, as well, so I'd appreciate any comments on this. I'm
a writer and will continue to work with my projects.

Can anyone recommend where to look for affordable housing? I think we want
to rent at first until we have some time to look around. Are there any
university-type communities? Of course we'll need Internet connections.

Do we need work permits to do volunteer work? My Spanish is pretty good but
I'll want to attend some classes. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help. The region looks beautiful and I know we will enjoy our
new life. We decided to come early and beat the boomers...
