I STILL CONTEND.. at the airort at SPS.. do not flash money with the money changers there.. I know most of them and when I go there, they all greet me.. BUT I would not trust them... if you changed money and then got into a car, I always have that feeling that they pass the word on somehow... Sorry but I might be overly cautious in that aspect.... I have felt comfortable driving there but am careful not to drive at night. The highway to Ceiba from SPS is big, fast and probably uneventful. I would not say that it is safe for tourists to drive around on the mainland but between the airport and Ceiba has posed no problems for us. We have been stopped and hassled by police but it was my fault because my drivers license was in the hotel. If you speak Spanish well this is not that much of a worry.
The real worry for me when renting is that something breaks down on the vehicle leaving you stranded somewhere. Also EVERY time I have rented a car in Honduras, be it through Hertz or Avis etc. there was not a car there when I arrived, instead I was directed to another booth who had a car and honored the price. Another interesting quirk is that the cars are always empty when you take them. You are also Required to get their insurance, which is probably a good idea anyway.
Flying to Ceiba is another consideration. It is quick and a beautiful flight and taxis in Ceiba are very cheap once you get there. I have not driven to Copan so am no help there. Feel free to email me direct if you want more details. We are going to Comayagua and Ceiba this Thursday.
Good luck!

Would renting a car/minivan be the best option to get from the airport in San Pedro Sula to La Ceiba? Is it safe for tourists driving around on the mainland? I wasn't too concerned, but several people have been telling us not to get shot by the bandits so I am getting worried. How about driving to Copan Ruinas from the airport?
THANKS! jo
