Brent, Progresso is hot and we are getting closer and closer to the hottest time of the year. If you are comfortable in shorts that is what I would wear. Somehow I think people are going to all ready know you are gringos. We always wear them because it is so hot down there. The people are very nice but the advice from Nicky is very true, be smart and you should be fine. I would especially echo the cabbage thing, and don't eat off the street. One wrong move there can be very uncomfortable! Be sure to bring anything you might need for that kind of problem...

Hi Brent, The Casa Blanca is the best hotel in town, very nice, quite central. The Plaza Victoria is also nice, and right in the middle of town. both are in walking distance of the church during the day. La Casona is a good italian restaurant (nice ambient, run by an american/honduran) just off the boulevard, next door to Las Tejas - the best typical restaurant in town (a must eat!). Also nice are La Parilla and La Parillada (over the road from each other), with La Parilla being the more expensive with more choice - you would have to get a taxi here. Pollos y mas (by the big yellow statue at the exit towards tela) is great for buffet style lunches. Make sure you don't leave without eating some baleadas (the local take away food - flour tortillas with beans and cheese or eggs or other fillings). Avoid other street food, especially cabbage anywhere - but the you cant beat a breakfast of baleadas from pollos y mas. Have a Moccachino Supremo from Expreso Americano in the center! Also great are smoothies from Super Jugos. Only "gringos" wear shorts - best avoided. Progreso is a great town, really friendly, but please be careful with your belongings and avoid flashing money around. Taxis are generally very safe, but agree on a price before getting in and at night be alert in that you dont get in a taxi with a drunk driver. Also probably avoid taking a taxi that has anyone else in it. Don't be intimidated by the seeming cahos of town center, but do be alert for pick pockets at all times, and leave all expensive looking jewelry at home. Try and speak as much spanish as you can, and don't be wary everytime someone asks you lots of questions. people are generally interested in what you are doing in their town. Have a great time Nicky Roberts

We've been told the family thing will enhance the experience. What are some of the best hotels near Las Mercedes catholic church? Any restaurants in that area that are recommended? We've heard people don't wear shorts frequently there, is that true? Also, does anyone know where a good cheap or free high speed public internt terminal is near Las Mercedes? Anything else we should know about visiting El Progresso, besides don't drink the water and the fact that it will be hot? Many thanks!
