Honduras Information FAQ > General Info

What does the Honduran flag look like?

In 1866 the national flag was designed and established under a decree in parliament. In 1949 this decree was reformed to completely establish the parts and shape of the national flag and its usage in official ceremonies.

The flag consists of three equally wide horizontal stripes: two outer blue stripes and one central white one. In the middle of the white stripe, are five blue stars. The blue stripes represent the sky, noble ideas and fraternal love. The white stripe represents the desire for peace.

The five blue stars represent Honduras as the central star and then Guatemala in the NW, Nicaragua in the NE, El Salvador in the SW and Costa Rica in the SE. These stars also represent Francisco Morazan’s desire for a united Central America.
