Is soccer (called football there) or baseball popular in the Bay Islands and Honduras?

Soccer is the most popular sport in Honduras. The Latin American passion of football runs strong in Honduras. When the national team is playing be prepared for cities and citizens to stop or slow down so they may listen or watch the game. In recent years Honduras has had a certain level of success in the World Cup, and they remain one the top teams in the North America – Central America – Caribbean Region.

There is a strong national competition with 10 teams and games are played regularly, check locally for where and when. The most popular teams are Olimpia, Marathon, Real Espana, Motagua and Platense.

To add to this even the smallest of towns will have a soccer field or pitch. On weekends or weeknights a game or training will always be going on. These local games are fun and enjoyable to watch and are a great chance to meet local residents and maybe even to enjoy an after game kick of the soccer ball with them.

In the Bay Islands, you will find that baseball is also popular, especially on Roatan. Each area on Roatan has its own team and competition can be fierce. Watching a game can be a lot of fun, so ask around for when and where the next game is. They usually take place on Sunday afternoons, often with a party afterward.
