Helping Honduras Kids is looking for volunteers who have a solid work ethic and desire to share their time and talents helping our children. We welcome volunteers of any race, religion or country of origin and are particularly interested in long-term volunteers that are bi-lingual. We invite musicians, artists, computer wizards, storytellers, karate, soccer experts and other talented people, who would like to offer workshops or performances for the children and others in the community. We desire the minimum volunteer period to be typically 4-weeks. Most of our volunteers enter Honduras on a tourist visa that they are responsible to renew every 90 days. HHK volunteers also pay their own travel, food and incidental expenses. We prefer volunteers that are (20) years and older and are bi-linguel. All volunteers must complete an application, clear a background check, and sign a waiver. Volunteers will also be required to have International Emergency Medical Insurance and travel liabilaity insurance. Volunteers need to also be up-to-date on all childhood immunizations. My Little Red House Bilingual School is currently looking for volunteer teachers to teach English as well as to learn or practice Spanish. Room and board will be provided along with the chance to make some money giving private classes to either students at the school or to adults in the city. You will also have ample time to get to know the city of Ocotepeque and to get involved in the community if you so wish. On weekends and other school vacations you can also explore outlaying areas, travel to historical Copan Ruins or the beautiful Bay Islands.The type of person we are looking for must know English very well and he or she doesn’t have to be native speaker. The person also has to love working with children as the school has students from pre-school to grade six, Be patient and have great creativity and imagination. Of course, living in another country for some time also means that the foreigners who decide to come here have to be open to other cultures. Background on the program
In 1995 Mrs. Graciela Velasquez a middle school teacher came up with the idea to help young children who were unable to enter elementary school because of poverty, did. She founded Blanca Jeannette Kawas Bilingual School. It’s main purpose is to help families who wanted the best education for their kids but were unable to pay for it. At that time there were just some children who had benefited from primary school scholarships, but now those monies are exhausted.. They were facing a dilemma for some very gifted students. The challenge of getting a proper education is region-wide.
Costs of attending schools are varied and increasing. Some children live too far away to walk to school every day, so they have to pay transportation. Others cannot afford tuition and books. Some do not possess decent clothes in which to attend school. In some cases parents are unwilling to send their children, and need an incentive payment for encouragement. The cost varies from $275 to $300 a year, depending on the situation of the child.
Per child, first year: $325.
Per child, each of subsequent two years: $275
